A Study of Students’ Perception on Teacher’s Oral Corrective Feedback in Speaking Class at SMPN 17 Banda Aceh, Indonesia

Abstract


Oral corrective feedback is often practiced by the teacher in teaching English especially for speaking practice. This study aims to figure out students’ perception on teacher’s oral corrective feedback in speaking class. This quantitative research utilized the data collected from the closed- ended questionnaire. There were 133 students who participated in this research from SMPN 17 Banda Aceh. The data were then computed into SPSS version 23 for windows to find out range of total the result. The result of data were classified into four categories namely ways of delivering feedback, students' emotion, improvement in English and appropriate occasion of feedback delivery. The analysis results show that most of the students have positive perception toward teacher’s corrective feedback. It starts with the preference way to deliver the oral corrective feedback is by practicing explicit correction, elicitation, metalinguistic, recast and clarification request. Then, the students perceived that teacher’s oral corrective feedbacks helped them to improve their speaking skill, identified their weaknesses in speaking skill and used the feedback as a reference to study independently. In conclusion, students perceived that teacher's oral corrective feedback helped them to improve their English speaking skill.
