Test of minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of kencur (Kaempferia galanga L.) extract on the growth of Fusobacterium nucleatum
Abstract
Fusobacterium nucleatum is a pathogenic bacterium that plays a role in periodontal diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. One way to control periodontal disease is by administering antibacterial agents. Galanga extract (Kaempferia galanga L.) contains alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids which have antibacterial activity. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum kill concentration of kencur (Kaempferia galanga L.) on the growth of Fusobacterium nucleatum bacterium. Method: The method used is the dilution method using minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration. In this study, 7 research groups were used, namely galangal extract (Kaempferia galanga L.) with a concentration of 25%, 50%, 75% 100%, Chlorhexidine 0.2% as a positive control, and distilled water solution as a negative control. Result: The results of the research were then carried out statistical tests using the Kruskal-Wallis test which showed a significance of 0.000 (p<0.05), there were significant differences between various concentrations in the average number of colonies. Conclusion: Conclusion from this research is Galanga extract (Kaempferia galanga L.) has a minimum inhibitory concentration at a concentration of 25% and a minimum bactericidal concentration at a concentration of 50% in inhibiting the growth of Fusobacterium nucleatum.
